Happy 100th birthday, Dylan Thomas!
He was known as much for his poetry as he was for his tumultuous life and tragically early death, but today the world celebrates the 100th birthday of legendary Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
Thomas, best known for his play “Under Milk Wood” and poems like “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night,” died at 39 of pneumonia. His writing still endures, though, and he’s the subject of tributes around the world today.
Sunday in New York, the 92Y Poetry Center presented a reading of “Under Milk Wood,” directed by Welsh actor Michael Sheen. You can hear Thomas read his famous play here.
Join in the celebration by listening to Thomas read his poetry; there are several recordings online including “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night,” “Lament,” and “Poem in October.” The British Council Seminar Series also has a set of short documentaries about the poet.
Many of Thomas’ poems are available for reading online. The Poetry Foundation has a good selection of his verse, as well as some essays about the poet.
Perhaps the biggest celebration of the author is taking place in his native Wales. In Thomas’ hometown of Swansea, fans are celebrating with a 36-hour-long “Dylathon,” featuring readings by Ian McKellen and Prince Charles.
