Encino home built for ‘Wizard of Oz’ choreographer heading to market

The storied Woodley Estate will be coming on the market in Encino at $3.999 million.

Built in 1932 for “The Wizard of Oz” choreographer Bobby Connelly, the four-bedroom, three-bathroom main house originally sat on 30 acres. The Mission-style house changed hands for $131,000 in 1975 and more recently in 1999 for $900,000.

Most of the land was sold off during the tenure of early owner Alvino Rey, a big band and swing musician notable. The lot is now about two-thirds of an acre.

The house was later owned by actor Gary Crosby, who was crooner Bing Crosby’s son, and then astronaut Gordon Cooper, who sold to the current owner 16 years ago.

In addition to the 3,674-square-foot main house, which features vaulted wood ceilings and tile floors, there’s a 900-square-foot detached guesthouse with one bedroom and one bathroom. Maid’s quarters off the garage contain another bedroom and bathroom.

Tile accents on the swimming pool are also featured on pathways and fountains throughout the property. Mature olive trees, as well as citrus and fruit trees, dot the gardens. The patio includes a brick fireplace.
