Underwater pool camera tweets surreal photos of Olympic swimmers
Athletes, journalists and fans aren’t the only ones who have been tweeting from the London Olympics. For a more surreal look at the games, consider following the Twitter feed of the Olympic pool camera: @L2012PoolCam.
That’s right, a camera stationed at the bottom of the Olympic pool has been tweeting pictures of the world’s fastest swimmers as they cut through the water, and the photos are eerie, gorgeous and awesome.
“I match the world’s best swimmers, stroke for stroke,” the pool camera’s Twitter bio reads. “They speed along on top. I race along the bottom, always looking up -- and always wet.”
Pool Camera introduced itself July 27 with its first tweet: “In position under Lane 4. Join me underwater for a different perspective on #Swimming at #London2012.”
The Twitter feed includes underwater shots of Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, and one of Chinese swimmer Yang Sun stretched out in what appears to be a sea of empty water. “If you think Yang Sun looks lonely in this one, try living at the bottom of the #Swimming pool. #London2012,” says the tweet accompanying the shot.
Pool Camera has tweeted only 17 times since the start of the Olympics, and despite what the social media gurus might say, the restraint is refreshing. It hasn’t seemed to hurt Pool Camera’s social standing, either -- it has more than 17,000 followers. A thousand followers per tweet is not bad.
Pool Camera is not the only camera that will be tweeting from the Olympics. As we move into the track and field portion of the 2012 London Olympic Games, you may want to follow @2012StadiumCam.
“When the athletes are on the home straight in the #OlympicStadium, I’ll be all over it with great photos! #London2012 https://l2012.cm/OrNe5U,” Stadium Cam says in its first post.
On Friday it tweeted its first photo of an athlete crossing a finish line, with this note: “This is it. The moment I’ve been waiting for. The first athlete to reach my line. Gold. History is made. #London2012 pic.twitter.com/oxxgsy0s.”
