Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg marries longtime girlfriend
A day after taking his company public and raising his wealth to more than $19 billion, Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg married his longtime girlfriend.
The 28-year-old entrepreneur posted the news on his Facebook timeline Saturday evening, adding a life event reading “Married Priscilla Chan.”
Chan and Zuckerberg -- who, based on the photo he posted, wore a suit jacket at the wedding rather than his usual hoodie -- had been dating since the early days of Facebook. They met as Harvard students and have been together more than nine years, according to the Associated Press.
Fewer than 100 people attended the wedding, and those guests arrived under the impression that they would be celebrating Chan’s recent graduation from UC San Francisco’s medical school, according to a tweet from a Huffington Post editor.
The wedding was held in the backyard of Zuckerberg’s Palo Alto, Calif., home.
Chan’s ring featured only a “very simple ruby,” a source authorized by the couple to speak told the AP.
The wedding capped a busy week for Zuckerberg.
His birthday and Chan’s graduation from medical school were both Monday, and on Friday, he rang the Nasdaq Stock Market’s bell from Facebook headquarters in California on his company’s first day of trading on the public market.
Facebook’s shares were priced at $38 Thursday and got off to a hot start Friday, opening at $42.05. They briefly shot up to $45 but traded around the $40 mark for most of the day before closing at $38.23.
