SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA NEIGHBORHOOD PAGES

Click on the cities and neighborhoods below for descriptions of life in these Los Angeles areas.

ALHAMBRA BACKGROUND

Alhambra is a diverse, vibrant and family-friendly community in the western San Gabriel Valley.

Its name comes from "Tales of the Alhambra," Washington Irving's 1831 travelogue in which he dreamily recounts the larger-than-life legends surrounding the Alhambra Palace in southern Spain. Although the San Gabriel Mountains, which loom in the distance, may not hold stories of palace intrigue, they do provide a verdant backdrop for the bustling commercial avenues that run though the city.

Incorporated as a city in 1903, Alhambra benefits from its proximity to downtown Los Angeles as well as nearby commercial centers such as Pasadena, Glendale and Burbank. The recently revitalized Main Street Business District, centered at the corner of Main and 1st streets, offers several small banks and local shopping as well as condominiums and apartments. The Alhambra Campus, a high-tech office complex, houses some of Alhambra's biggest businesses, including Alliant International University and the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

Several waves of immigration have given the city its ethnic and racial diversity. After World War II, upwardly mobile Mexican immigrants, in a steady stream, slowly made their way into the Alhambra community from the less affluent nearby Latino areas of Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles. Then, in the '70s and '80s, many East Asian immigrants moved to Alhambra, in part because it is close to the largely Asian community of Monterey Park.

Currently, the population is 47.2% Asian, 35.9% Latino and 30.02% Caucasian. Many businesses along Main Street and Valley Boulevard are run by and for Asians, reflecting that community's large size. There are supermarkets, restaurants, shops, banks, and real estate and medical offices, which have Asian goods and cater specifically to this population.

Housing includes a diverse array of single-family homes, town homes, condominiums and apartments. Although housing prices have risen substantially in the last few years, they are still low relative to many Los Angeles areas. In 2002, the median price for a single-family home in Alhambra was $250,000, compared with $490,000 in March 2007, according to DataQuick Information Systems.

Some of the more desirable areas of the city include the Bean Tract, an area named for Jacob Bean, who used the land as a citrus grove for many years before subdividing and selling the lots. The postwar three- to four-bedroom, two-bathroom, single-story homes here range in price from $650,000 to $900,000. In the Midwick and Emery Park areas, homes are smaller, with two or three bedrooms, and command prices in from about $525,000 to $675,000.

In addition, north of Main Street is a popular area for condominiums and town homes, which are priced in the $350,000-to-$475,000 range.
