David Krumholtz pulls out of ‘Sunshine Boys’ at Ahmanson Theatre

Actor David Krumholtz has left the upcoming revival of Neil Simon’s “The Sunshine Boys” at the Ahmanson Theatre. The production, starring Danny DeVito and Judd Hirsch, is scheduled to begin preview performances Sept. 24.

A spokesman for Center Theatre Group said that Krumholtz’s departure from the play was due to “personal reasons.” He said that Krumholtz left the production early last week, the second week of a five-week rehearsal process.

A representative for Krumholtz wasn’t immediately available to comment.

Krumholtz was to play the role of Ben, a talent scout who reunites two feuding vaudeville performers. The role will now be played by Justin Bartha, who appeared in the three “Hangover” movies and on the NBC comedy “The New Normal” last season.

The CTG spokesman said that Bartha was in rehearsals by the end of the second week.

“The Sunshine Boys” production comes by way of London’s West End, where it starred DeVito and the late Richard Griffiths. The L.A. cast originally included Griffiths, who died in March and was replaced by Hirsch.
