Ones that made you say ‘wow’

In what cinematic world do “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Cloverfield,” “Iron Man” and “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” earn equal attention? Well, they are all among the nominees for the Visual Effects Society Awards announced Monday.

Nominees for outstanding visual effects in a visual effects-driven motion picture are Wendy Rogers, Dean Wright, Andrew Fowler and Greg Butler for “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”; Eric Barba, Edson Williams, Nathan McGuinness and Lisa Beroud for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”; Michael J. Wassel, Lucy Killick, Adrian de Wet and Eamonn Butler for “Hellboy II: The Golden Army”; and Ben Snow, Hal Hickel, Victoria Alonso and John Nelson for “Iron Man.”

For supporting visual effects in a film, the nominees are from “Changeling,” “Eagle Eye,” “Valkyrie,” “Nim’s Island” and “Synecdoche, New York.”

Contenders for best single visual effect of the year worked on these film segments: the Statute of Liberty crash and the Woolworth Tower collapse in “Cloverfield”; “Benjamin’s Secret” in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”; “Newborn Klaatu” in “The Day the Earth Stood Still”; the valley destruction in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”; and segments of “Iron Man.”

Vying for outstanding animation in an animated motion picture are teams from “Bolt,” “Kung Fu Panda,” “Wallace and Gromit in ‘A Matter of Loaf and Death’ ” and “Wall-E” (“Bolt,” “Panda” and “Wall-E” animators are also nominated for animated character in an animated movie). For outstanding animated character in a live-action motion picture, nominees are from “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” “Iron Man” and “The Spiderwick Chronicles.” Nods for effects animation in an animated film went to teams from “Bolt,” “Panda,” “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” and “Wall-E.” Nominees for matte paintings in a feature film are from “Changeling,” “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” “Synecdoche, New York” and “Speed Racer.” Teams from “The Dark Knight” and “Defiance” were nominated for special effects in a motion picture.
