Justin Bieber said Wednesday that he broke his eardrum and may require surgery, news the international pop star reported to fans on Twitter in the late afternoon.

According to Bieber’s Twitter account, he broke his eardrum while cliff diving.

“Busted my ear drum cliff diving. Doc says might need surgery now. Sucks,” he tweeted.

As of 7 p.m., the tweet had more than 38,000 retweets and more than 41,000 favorites.

Shortly after that tweet, he sent: “My ear drum might back us up a little but I’m still bringing you this new music. Much love. Damn u cliff diving!”

#FeelBetterJustin began trending worldwide after he made the announcement.

It was not immediately clear where Bieber was when the injury occurred or how recently it took place.

An attempt to reach a representative for Bieber was not immediately successful.

The reported injury adds to a long list of incidents that has made for a tumultuous year for the star, who doesn’t turn 21 until March.

On Dec. 30, during a limousine ride to a Toronto Maple Leafs game, Bieber allegedly got into a confrontation with the driver, who stopped the car and called police, the New York Daily News reported.

Prosecutors in Toronto recently withdrew a charge related to the case, saying there was no reasonable prospect of conviction, the Associated Press reported.

In January, he was arrested in Miami on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol and of street racing. Bieber pleaded guilty to charges of careless driving and resisting arrest in August.

He avoided jail time in the plea deal.

Also in July, Bieber pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor vandalism charge related to the egging of a Calabasas neighbor’s home, and was hit with an $81,000 fine and two years’ probation.
