KIIS-FM tops Los Angeles-Orange County radio rankings
Pop station KIIS-FM (102.7) once again grabbed the top spot in Los Angeles-Orange County radio in April, and even widened its lead slightly, according to ratings released Monday by Arbitron.
KIIS increased its average share of the listening audience age 6 and older, moving from 5.1% in March to 5.2% in April. And the station grew its average weekly audience from 3.898 million to 3.943 million, based on the survey of listeners between March 31 and April 27.
Talk station KFI-AM (640) moved into second place overall, increasing its audience share from 4.3% in March to 4.5%. Adult-contemporary station KOST-FM (103.5) slipped from second to third, as it dropped from 4.6% to 4.4%.
Classic hits station KRTH-FM (101.1) and hip-hop outlet KPWR-FM (105.9) repeated their March showings, finishing fourth with 4.2% and fifth at 3.8%, respectively.
Rounding out the Top 10 were, in order, KLVE-FM (107.5), KBIG-FM (104.3), KAMP-FM (97.1), KHHT-FM (92.3) and KROQ-FM (106.7).
At all-news KNX-AM (1070), big stories such as the Japan earthquake and tsunami buoyed ratings in March to their highest point since the O.J. Simpson trial in 1995 — a sixth-place finish at 3.5%. But the station fell back to 13th place in April, registering a 3% audience share — just a shade better than what it garnered in January and February.
In the key weekday hours of 6-10 a.m. — prime time for radio because of the number of people listening as they prepare for work and school — KFI reclaimed its traditional top spot, after being displaced for a month by the team of Kevin Ryder and Gene “Bean” Baxter on alternative rock KROQ-FM. KFI’s combination of local host Bill Handel and then the first hour of Rush Limbaugh’s syndicated program snagged 6.4% of the audience, while “Kevin & Bean” fell to second at 5.3%. They had been at 6.2% in March, while KFI took a 5.9% share.
KNX remained third in the morning, dipping only slightly from 5.2% to 5%. KIIS’ Ryan Seacrest was fourth, at 4.8%.
