Old flooring: It’s an art

Old linoleum suits Bill Miller. Bits and pieces of discarded flooring become art in his hands. “I cut and shape them by hand, knife and scissors,” says Miller, who has studios in Silver Springs, Md., and near Woodstock, N.Y. “Sometimes I work with found shapes.” Miller primarily uses pre-World War II linoleum to create mosaic-like images, bound to wooden boards with industrial-strength construction glue and finished with a water-based varnish. The first L.A.-area exhibit of these collages, which sell for $2,000 to $12,000 and include a Lincoln portrait shown here, runs until May 27 at Frank Pictures Gallery at Bergamot Station. 2525 Michigan Ave., Santa Monica, (310) 828-0211, frankpicturesgallery.com.
