Newsletter: Hot Property: Reelin’ in the years
As housing market watchers, we’re often curious to see if there’s a connection between home-style preferences and the age of the buyer or seller. Based on this week alone, we came across a few surprises. Here are the looks that resonated with those we wrote about, from youngest celebrity to oldest star.

Traditional in his ‘20s?
Throwing water big-time on any theories we might have been developing, Joe Jonas of Jonas Brothers fame owns a 1923 traditional-style home in Hollywood Hills he just listed at $2.895 million. The 26-year-old singer’s tastefully sedate digs do come with a swimming pool and outdoor dining area, so party on.
DeAndre Jordan, who re-upped with the L.A. Clippers to the tune of $87 million this offseason, put some of his newfound capital to good use on the Westside, paying $12.7 million for a 10,500-square-foot Cape Cod-inspired traditional in Pacific Palisades.
Located near teammate Blake Griffin's pad, the 27-year-old center's new home touts indoor and outdoor pools, a glass-enclosed wine cellar and a hidden office accessed by a swiveling bookshelf.
Actor Ian Harding, 29, of the TV series “Pretty Little Liars” has his bohemian-vibe hideaway in Laurel Canyon for sale at $1.195 million. The 1948 bungalow has a romantic wooden deck with white lights along the railing and in the nearby mature trees, plus a super-cute outdoor dining spot.
Quaint, quiet, secluded – apparently we have no clue about celebrity home tastes.
Thirtysomething turnaround
Australian singer-songwriter Sia listed a home in Los Feliz for sale at $4.995 million after only four months of ownership. The 1920s Mediterranean Revival villa is unusual, having been designed by architect A.F. Leicht, who never met a line he didn’t want to bend or curve. It’s a great match for the distinctive songstress.
What’s surprising here is that the 30-year-old hitmaker would have ever bought such a high-profile home. No doubt the ornate carving, stained-glass murals and elaborately shaped windows and ceilings spoke to her at the time.
That timeless appeal
Looking to make a break from the Hollywood Hills is "Breaking Bad" star Anna Gunn, 47, who put her remodeled 1960s Midcentury Modern home on the market last week for $2.1 million. The 2,447-square-foot home features an open floor plan, high ceilings and walls of glass. An atrium courtyard entry furthers the indoor-outdoor vibe.
His home, a castle
Perhaps our most fun find of the week was Megadeth co-founder David Mustaine’s estate in Fallbrook, for sale at $5.375 million. The 54-year-old lead singer and guitarist has a whole Medieval Times thing going on at the sprawling 9.5-acre spread in the northern San Diego city that includes vineyards, pastureland and a pond.
The country English-style main residence, built in 1990, incorporates rock and stone work, decorative painting and heavy beams creating a castle-like ambiance. Just for grins, a red phone booth sits outside the gates.
Grounded in his 60s
R&B singer-songwriter James Ingram listed his Spanish-style home in Hancock Park last week at $1,949,500. Finally, a fit: a classic for a classic. The 1923 home has a vintage character with its wrought iron staircase railing, high ceilings, stained-glass windows and original lighting fixtures.
Ingram, 63, has worked with about every big name in music. Ray Charles, Donna Summer, Quincy Jones, Linda Ronstadt — we could go on and on. He won Grammys for the 1980s hits “Yah Mo B There” and “One Hundred Ways.” If you don’t know those tunes, take a listen.
Off the charts
Television heavyweights and multiple Emmy-winners Greg Hoblit, 70, and Robert Breech, 68, recently went off-script in a recent Santa Monica home transaction. Hoblit, a decorated director and producer, sold his rustic English Country-style home to Breech, a veteran producer, for $5.6 million in a deal that closed outside the Multiple Listing Service.
Custom wood built-ins, tiled fireplaces and outdoor living spaces topped by mature trees highlight the 4,830-square-foot home on about a third of an acre.
What we’re reading
So many real estate websites and publications are out there vying for attention. Carrington Real Estate Services caught ours with their blog on five favorite listings in Del Mar. The third was the grabber: A 5,000-square-foot Craftsman-style home in the Olde Del Mar neighborhood listed at $4.5 million. River rock, shingle siding, wide-beam overhangs – now that’s eye candy.
Fans of the arts design styles of the 1920s, '30s and '40s will likely swoon at the news that One Bunker Hill will soon see a facelift aimed at restoring key features of the Art Deco-style building. L.A. Times reporter Roger Vincent details the recent sale of the former Edison headquarters and plans for an upcoming restoration.
Steve Lopez’s column about Bel-Air being home to the state’s biggest homeowner water guzzler is worth the read if you missed it. We wonder whether area real estate agents know which estate is using 32,000 gallons a day.
