A suspect was killed late Tuesday and a Los Angeles police officer involved in a shooting at the scene was taken to a hospital with an injury.

Just before 9 p.m., at least one officer responded to a shooting in progress near Wilmington Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway in Wilmington, said Officer Mike Lopez, an LAPD spokesman.

An officer opened fire at the scene, police said.

One suspect involved in the shooting was dead at the scene, Lopez said. It’s unclear whether the suspect was hit by police gunfire. Police initially said a second suspect was detained but later clarified that only one suspect was involved in the incident.

Police have not said whether the suspect was armed.

The officer suffered an arm injury and was taken to a hospital, Lopez said.

It’s unclear what struck the officer, but the officer did not appear to have been wounded by a gunshot, according to an email from Arif Alikhan, the LAPD’s director of constitutional policing.

The officer’s condition was not immediately available.

Video and photos from the scene showed a marked police cruiser stopped on a sidewalk and a white tent covering part of the front of the vehicle.
