Police shoot, wound man carrying rifle in South San Francisco

A man carrying a rifle was shot and wounded Sunday by police in South San Francisco, authorities said.

Officers went to Del Monte and Romney avenues about 9:30 a.m. after a resident reported a man carrying a gun, according to a statement released by the South San Francisco Police Department.

An officer commanded the man to drop the rifle, but the man did not obey, and he approached the officer “while brandishing the firearm,” police said.

The officer opened fire, wounding the man, who was taken to a hospital, police said. The officer was not injured.

Police did not release the identity of the officer or of the man. The shooting will be investigated by the Police Department as well as the San Mateo County district attorney’s office.

South San Francisco is a Bay Area city with a population of about 67,000.
