San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy injured in shooting
A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputy was shot and wounded by a robbery suspect early Thursday in Hesperia, authorities said.
The Victor Valley Station deputy was struck once in the chest but was wearing body armor, Jodi Miller, a San Bernardino sheriff’s spokeswoman, said in an email. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening and released Thursday morning.
The suspect was arrested Thursday afternoon, the sheriff’s department said on Twitter. Details about the arrest were not immediately available.
The deputy, whose name has not been released, responded at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday to a report of an armed robbery at a Chevron gas station at Ranchero Road and Escondido Avenue in Hesperia, Miller said.
The man assaulted the store clerk, who did not require medical attention, Miller said.
While searching the area, the deputy found a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s — a dark-colored car similar to a Chrysler 200. The deputy approached the vehicle and “exchanged words” with the driver and pepper-sprayed him, Miller said.
“The suspect immediately began shooting at the deputy, striking him once in the chest,” Miller wrote in the email. “The deputy retreated to his vehicle and exchanged gunfire.”
The deputy was shot around 12:30 a.m., Miller said.
The suspect then fled the gas station, traveling north on Escondido. The deputy followed him about two miles north to Escondido and Muscatel Street, where he stopped and requested medical aid, Miller said.
