College basketball: No. 2 Kansas rallies past No. 4 Kentucky

Frank Mason III scored 21 points, Josh Jackson had 20 points and No. 2 Kansas rallied past No. 4 Kentucky, 79-73, Saturday night in the SEC-Big 12 Challenge at Lexington, Ky.

Three-point shooting was crucial for the Jayhawks (19-2), who shook off an 0-for-8 first half to make five of 11 in the second half.

Mason had 13 second-half points and Landen Lucas contributed 13 points, including a layup with 4 minutes 41 seconds remaining for a 69-59 lead, and five rebounds before fouling out. Jackson had 10 rebounds.

Malik Monk and Derek Willis each had 18 points for the Wildcats (17-4).

Unfazed by first-half perimeter woes, the Jayhawks made their first three shots from long range in the second half to change the momentum. They also forced 17 turnovers for 21 points.

The Wildcats’ ragged stretch just before halftime resulted in 10 turnovers, and their problems continued in the second half. They gave the Jayhawks all kinds of opportunities that not even 40% three-point shooting could overcome.

No. 5 Baylor 78, at Mississippi 75: Manu Lecomte scored 17 points, Johnathan Motley and Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. each had 16 and the Bears (20-1) rallied from a 15-point deficit in the first half at the SEC-Big 12 Challenge. Sebastian Saiz and freshman Breein Tyree each scored 20 points for the Rebels (12-9).

at Syracuse 82, No. 6 Florida State 72: Andrew White scored 24 points and John Gillon had 21 points, including 10 free throws in the final three minutes, to help the Orange (13-9, 5-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat a ranked team for the first time this season. Dwayne Bacon and Jonathan Isaac each had 19 points for the Seminoles (18-4, 6-3).

at Miami 77, No. 9 North Carolina 62: Freshman Bruce Brown scored a career-high 30 points and the Hurricanes (14-6, 4-4 ACC) held the Tar Heels (19-4, 7-2), who had won seven games in a row, to 35% shooting. Justin Jackson led North Carolina with 21 points.

Georgetown 85, at No. 11 Butler 81: L.J. Peak scored 22 points and Jessie Govan beat the shot clock with a key three-pointer with 1:03 left, helping the Hoyas (12-10, 3-6 Big East Conference) end the Bulldogs’ 14-game home winning streak. It was the second consecutive victory by Georgetown against a ranked opponent. Kelan Martin scored 22 points for Butler (18-4, 7-3) .

at Georgia Tech 62, No. 14 Notre Dame 60: Josh Okogie scored a fastbreak layup as time expired, Tadric Jackson had a career-high 25 points and the Yellow Jackets (13-8, 5-4 ACC) picked up their third victory over a top-10 team this season. Bonzie Colson had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Fighting Irish (17-5, 6-3).

No. 15 Wisconsin 61, Rutgers 54 (OT): Ethan Happ scored seven points in overtime and finished with 32 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Happ was the only player for the Badgers (18-3, 7-1 Big Ten Conference) to shoot above 50% and the team finished at 33.3%. Corey Sanders had 15 points for the Scarlet Knights (12-10, 1-8).

at No. 16 Creighton 83, DePaul 66: Khyri Thomas scored 18 points and the Bluejays (19-3, 6-3 Big East) won for the first time in three games since losing star point guard Maurice Watson Jr. to a season-ending knee injury. Billy Garrett Jr. scored 18 points for the Blue Demons (8-13, 1-7).

No. 17 Duke 85, at Wake Forest 83: Luke Kennard made a three-point basket with 6.6 seconds left to lift the Blue Devils (16-5, 4-4 ACC). Kennard finished with 34 points. Bryant Crawford scored a career-high 26 points for the Demon Deacons (12-9, 3-6).

at No. 18 West Virginia 81, Texas A&M 77: Jevon Carter had 19 points for the Mountaineers (17-4), who led by as many as 20 points in the second half of an SEC-Big 12 Challenge game before the Aggies (11-9) rallied with a 22-8 run. Admon Gilder had 24 points for the Aggies, and Tyler Davis had 19 points and 18 rebounds.

at UC Davis 74, UC Irvine 65: Chima Moneke scored 22 points, including eight-for-eight shooting from the free-throw line, and the Aggies (13-8, 5-1) took sole possession of first place in the Big West Conference with a come-from-behind victory over the Anteaters (13-11, 6-2). Davis has won three in a row and is unbeaten at home this season. Eyassu Worku led Irvine with 18 points.

Cal State Northridge 63, at UC Riverside 59: Tavrion Dawson had 22 points and eight rebounds to help the Matadors (9-12, 5-3 Big West) end a three-game losing streak, while ending a four-game winning streak for the Highlanders (6-12, 4-3). Northridge shot only 32.1%.

at Cal State Fullerton 81, Cal Poly 71: Freshman Jackson Rowe scored 24 points to lead five Titans in double figures as Fullerton (9-11, 3-4 Big West) shot 54.3% from the field. Rowe also contributed seven rebounds and four assists. Victor Joseph had 22 points for the Mustangs, who shot only 38.5%.

at Brigham Young 85, Loyola Marymount 77: Eric Mika scored 27 points and the Cougars (16-7, 7-3 West Coast Conference) never trailed in the second half to complete a season sweep of the Lions (10-11, 3-7), who got 21 points from Buay Tuach and 17 apiece from Steven Haney and Brandon Brown.
