Racing! Time to sharpen some handicapping skills

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we give you another lesson in handicapping.

As we’ve done recently, we’re going to lead off today with another lesson in handicapping by Rob Henie of the WCHR (West Coast Handicapping Report) and the ECHR (East Coast Handicapping Report). The thinking is by breaking down a race a detail you can learn to handicap like the pros. Rob has been red hot and even offered his full-card wisdom to newsletter readers for free twice last week.

Today, Rob looks at the seventh race at Santa Anita.

“It’s an optional claimer at seven furlongs. We’re gonna give some credence here to the relationship between horse and rider. We often hear about certain ‘matchups’ in pro sports, hitters vs. pitchers, the quarterback and a favorite wide receiver, and this is extremely true in horse racing as well, certain horses and riders just ‘jive’ together a bit better than other matchups. Gate jocks go better on the front end, while others tend to prove an asset with a more patient ride before asking for more energy late. With this in mind, top choice here is TWISTED ROSIE (#3). In her first three races, we left thinking, ‘Kent is just ideal for her,’ so in sync with her. In her second start when breaking her maiden, she stumbled badly at the break, but you could just see Desormeaux gather her up, show patience, weaving in between runners, knowing what he had under him, while ‘Rosie did so willingly, not running into the bit or showing any sort of anxiousness. Last time out without Kent aboard, Bonde sent her long while Maldonado asked for some run out of the gate, not a bad effort, but no question not her comfort zone, nor her preferred style, nor was her partner-in-crime up in Desormeaux. Today, she strings races together, telling us she’s healthy, opening the door for a good effort, back sprinting, likely with the same tactics she’s proven to love. Take a look at FAMILY GIRL (#2), whose best efforts came with Roman up, both at Los Al, so they she may have a liking for that track, both wins came in the same style sitting just off the leaders, with Roman getting the same response in both trips aboard her. Watching for this type of ‘match up’ is advantageous, as all horses and jocks are not created equal, thus finding the pair that work well together is always useful.”

Race Outlook: We like this pair.

Win Contenders (order of preference): 3-2

X Out Runners (eliminating on the win end): 5,6

Positive Notes:

4 Carries Success — Hard-trying consistent sorts who finally break through with their maiden win, often continue right along against winners in the same hard trying manner, with the same type of effectiveness.

Negative Notes:

6 Smiling Tigress — Not quick enough early or late for these.

TOP PICK: TWISTED ROSIE (#3 4-1 Desormeaux)

SECOND CHOICE: FAMILY GIRL (#2 3-1 Roman)

Follow up answer man

Some readers weighed in on why horses may use the No. 8 during workouts. Eight is a lucky number in the Chinese culture. In fact, if you remember, the Beijing Olympics started at 8:08 on 8-8-08. Now, we’re not at all sure that is the reason but it’s a guess.

Santa Anita review

In an extremely close three-way photo, Mopotism got her nose down to win the Grade 2 $200,000 La Cañada Stakes for older fillies and mares. Mopotism was on the outside and rallied late to best Mended and La Force. The favorite, Majestic Heat, ran in the back until mid-turn but didn’t have enough to beat a good crop of fillies and mares. She finished fifth.

Mopotism paid $6.80, $3.60 and $3.00 for trainer Doug O’Neill and jockey Mario Gutierrez.

That combination usually means the horse is owned by Paul and Zillah Reddam. And, that’s correct.

“You know, I watched it live at first and I thought she got there but when I saw the replay and thought, ‘Oh, no. She got bobbed.’ ” Reddam said. “It was nice to end up on the right side of the photo but I felt bad for the mare we beat, Mended. She raced her guts out.”

Santa Anita preview

If you like mile races, Sunday’s card is for you. The first six races are all that distance. There are four turf races and two ungraded stakes.

The first of the stakes is the $75,000 Kalookan Queen Stakes over 6½ furlongs for fillies and mares 4 years old and up. It goes as the eighth race about 4 p.m. The favorite, at 9-5, is Selcourt. This is only her fourth race and she has been running in solid company. She finished second to Faypien in her last start and was beaten by Union Strike two races back.

Princess Karen is second favorite at 5-2. She won the Beverly Lewis Stakes at Los Alamitos and she ran in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, where she finished fifth.

The second stakes, and last on the card at about 4:30 p.m., is the $75,000 Astra Stakes also for fillies and mares, 4 years old and up, but over 1 1/12 miles on the turf. There is no big favorite in this race over this rarely contested distance.

Evo Campo is the morning-line favorite at 3-1. She is unbeaten in her two starts at 1½ miles and has five wins in six starts on Santa Anita’s turf course. Rafael Bejarano is riding for Paddy Gallagher.

At 7-2 are Estrechada and How Unusual. Estrechada has a Grade 3 win at Saratoga at 1½ miles last year. How Unusual is going for her third straight Astra win.

Well, there aren’t any that meet this standard on Sunday, but there are a couple on Monday.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

SIXTH RACE No. 10 Atonarun (4-1)

Comebacking Cal-bred gelding from Mike Puype barn turned in an even debut effort sprinting and should appreciate going two turns here. Despite drawing way outside, he has tactical speed and hopefully can save some ground under good turf rider Drayden Van Dyke for a stable that does very well off the layoff.

Saturday Result: Unapologetic faded badly when the real running began in the 4th race.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Ed Burgart LA play of the day

NINTH RACE: No. 1 Chicks Favorite (3-1)

He has been finding his best stride late vs. quality fields and should relish the 550-yard distance of this stakes. He was only a neck behind 2016 Champion Of Champions’ winner Zoomin For Spuds in a 350-yard dash two races back and was nearly two lengths clear of the third horse in last 400-yard stakes runner-up try. Defending champion He Is The Risingstar seems vulnerable, coming off a 13-week layoff.

Final thoughts
