Los Angeles County coroner’s officials Tuesday identified a man who stabbed a woman outside of a courthouse in Chatsworth before being fatally shot by a sheriff’s deputy.
Jose Armando Cueva, 55, was shot once in the upper body and was taken to a local hospital where he later died, coroner’s officials said.
The stabbing and deputy-involved shooting occurred about 12:05 p.m. Monday in the 9400 block of Penfield Avenue, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The department said Cueva and the woman, who was not identified, were arguing inside a car as they were pulling into the parking lot of the courthouse when Cueva allegedly began stabbing her.
“The victim was able to exit the vehicle and run toward the courthouse entrance doors,” the sheriff’s statement said, adding that Cueva chased after her.
“The suspect grabbed the victim and continued to stab her with a large knife,” the statement said. “A deputy and a security officer confronted the suspect and ordered him to drop the weapon. The suspect did not comply and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.”
Paramedics transported both Cueva and the woman to local hospitals. The woman is expected to survive.
