O.C. assessor charged with filing false nomination papers
Orange County Assessor Webster Guillory was charged Tuesday with filing false nomination papers in his reelection bid in the March 2014 primary.
Guillory, 70, of Newport Beach faces three felony counts and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday, the Orange County district attorney’s office said in a statement. He is expected to be released on his own recognizance.
On the filing deadline, March 7, Guillory collected signatures on two petitions, nine on the first and two on the second. An associate gathered three pages with 10 signatures on each one.
For the office of assessor, a candidate must submit 20 valid signatures of registered voters on nomination papers to qualify as a candidate and appear on the ballot.
Guillory is accused of signing two of the petitions his associate collected, prosecutors said, despite an affidavit on the form that says it can be signed only by the signature collector. He is also accused of asking another colleague to falsely sign the third petition.
Investigators with the Orange County district attorney’s office looked into the case after the receiving a confidential complaint.
