Car splits in two after crashing during street race, killing one

A street race ended in Commerce on Thursday night after one of the cars struck a tree and split in half, killing one of the people inside.

The collision occurred around 10:30 p.m. in the 5500 block of East Washington Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

One of the car’s occupants, 19-year-old Isaac Garcia, died after being transported to the hospital, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

Witnesses told KTLA-TV that the car, described as an Acura, hit 90 mph before it crossed all lanes and struck the tree, splitting in half. At least one person was ejected and others reportedly had to be extricated from the car, although it was not immediately clear which of them was Garcia.

Three people in all were transported to a local hospital, according to the sheriff’s department.
