Reader Photo: ‘Jesus saves’

The iconic neon “Jesus saves” sign in downtown L.A. has quite the story. It was once part of the Church of the Open Door, then moved to the United Artists Theater, which served as the Los Angeles University Cathedral. Now the building that the sign sits on houses the Ace Hotel.

In this image, Rinzi Ruiz frames the sign through a window in a parking garage on Hill and 9th streets. Especially striking in this image is the grunge on the window, which creates an especially moody tone.

Considering that the sign is now atop one of the trendiest hotels in Los Angeles, maybe Jesus did save the old building after all.
