City unions OK concessions
A coalition of Los Angeles public employee unions announced Wednesday it has ratified a concession agreement that postpones cost-of-living increases for two years and offers an early retirement program, forestalling the need for widespread layoffs and furloughs. The concessions were a critical component of the effort by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the City Council to close a $530-million budget shortfall.
The Coalition of LA City Unions includes almost 22,000 city employees and includes some of the city’s largest public employee unions, including the Service Employees International Union Local 721 and the local American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
“The agreement shows we can move forward in a spirit of cooperation,” said Cheryl Parisi, executive director of AFSCME District Council 36.
The terms of the agreement now will go before the Los Angeles City Employees’ Retirement board, and later the City Council, for consideration.
