Runners get school spirit in Newport Beach races
Elite runners, recreational joggers, children and some very energetic dogs converged on the loop around Fashion Island in Newport Beach on Sunday for the 35th annual Spirit Run to benefit the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.
The race schedule had something for everyone, from a 5K run/walk to a 1-mile run for dogs and their owners to a quarter-mile sprint for 4-year-olds and a 15K in honor of late Orange County runner Juan Ramirez Garcia, who was struck and killed by a car on Aug. 23 in Fountain Valley.
