Turley returns to major leagues

For the third time this season, La Cañada Flintridge resident Nik Turley received a call that he’s heading to the big leagues.

The former Harvard-Westlake High pitching star is one of four former Wolverine hurlers in Major League Baseball after the Minnesota Twins recalled Turley from triple-A Rochester on Friday, the day MLB rosters expanded to 40 players.

Perhaps the third time will be the charm for the left-hander, who will celebrate his 28th birthday on Monday.

In two previous major league stints this season, Turley has compiled an 0-2 record with an 11.66 earned-run average in three starts and six appearances spanning 14 2/3 innings. While’s he struck out 11, he’s walked six and allowed 25 hits, 19 earned runs and four home runs.

Turley has been much more effective in the minors, compiling a 5-5 record with a 2.05 ERA in 13 starts and 23 appearances at double-A Chattanooga and triple-A Rochester. He’s fanned 124 versus walking 29 with 64 hits, 21 earned runs and four homers allowed over 92 innings.

Baffert reigns at Del Mar

La Cañada Flintridge resident and trainer Bob Baffert is one of the titans of horse racing and on Monday he took his spot atop an iconic list.

When Baffert’s horse St. Patrick’s Day took home the victory in the eighth race on the final day of summer racing at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, Baffert became the San Diego-adjacent track’s all-time winningest trainer.

The triumph was Baffert’s No. 477, which moved him past Mike Mitchell in career victories. Two races later, Baffert picked up win No. 478.

Baffert entered Monday as the track’s all-time winningest stakes champion with 123 such wins.
