Jerry Jones is said to be interested in bringing Canelo Alvarez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight to AT&T Stadium

Oscar De La Hoya and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had a “very productive” discussion Friday about staging the May 6 Canelo Alvarez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. bout at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, according to an individual close to the site negotiations who was unauthorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena is said to be in the running to host the bout, but the promise of drawing a potential 100,000 people to a showdown between Mexico’s two most popular fighters is compelling to promoter De La Hoya and his No. 1 fighter, Alvarez, a popular fighter in Texas.

In September, more than 50,000 attended Alvarez’s knockout victory over little-known junior-middleweight champion Liam Smith of England at AT&T Stadium, home to Jones’ Dallas Cowboys NFL team.

In 2013, Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 knockouts) drew more than 40,000 to San Antonio’s Alamodome for a junior-middleweight title victory over Austin Trout.

Former middleweight world champion Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) also has strong support in Texas from the legacy of his father, Julio Sr., and his own dozen fights in the state.

Alvarez-Chavez Jr. will be fought at a catch-weight limit of 164.5 pounds and will be televised by HBO pay-per-view.

Chavez Jr. beat Brian Vera by unanimous decision at the Alamodome in 2014, and before that he was placed at venues including the Sun Bowl and Houston’s Reliant Arena.

Jones told the Los Angeles Times in September that he’s interested in hosting several Alvarez bouts, including the middleweight-title showdown against unbeaten three-belt champion Gennady Golovkin that’s being eyed for September.

MGM previously out-bid Jones for the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao fight.

De La Hoya is expected to determine the site “within the next couple of weeks,” the source said.
