Chad Billingsley put on DL, Stephen Fife to make major league debut

Chad Billingsley was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation.

Stephen Fife, who was called up from triple-A Albuquerque, will start in Billingsley’s place on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Billingsley’s move to the disabled list is retroactive to July 8, meaning he would be eligible to pitch on July 23 in St. Louis. But with Clayton Kershaw’s turn in the rotation falling on the day, Billingsley figures to pitch on July 24 at the earliest.

Fife, 25, will be making his major league debut. He made 18 starts for triple-A Albuquerque, posting a 7-5 record with a 4.53 earned-run average. Over his last eight starts in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, Fife was 4-1 with a 2.78 ERA.

Fife was acquired from the Boston Red Sox last year along with minor league catcher Tim Federowicz and pitcher Juan Rodriguez in exchange for outfielder Trayvon Robinson.
