Baseball: Daniel Moreno throw moves into top five of Dodger Stadium moments
The play of the game in City Section final
I’ve been attending City Section championship baseball games at Dodger Stadium since the late 1970s, and the throw from center field by Daniel Moreno of El Camino Real on Saturday in the sixth inning of a 2-1 victory over Chatsworth moves into my top list of best individual performances in championship game history.
It was so stunning because of its power and how far he threw it before it landed without a bounce into the glove of a waiting catcher Eric Yang to tag out Daniel Zakosek trying to score from second with plenty of time to spare.
It saved the game for the Conquistadores, because who knew what would have happened if Chatsworth had tied the game at that point.
My most memorable performances:
No. 1 is Bret Saberhagen’s no-hitter in the 1982 game against Palisades for Cleveland High, the only no-hitter in the Division 1 championship game.
No. 2 is Kevin Farlow’s two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the 1985 final that gave Kennedy a 10-9 win over Banning.
No. 3 is John Elway coming in to pitch in relief and shut down Crenshaw and Darryl Strawberry for Granada Hills in the 1979 City final.
Moreno’s throw gets top five status. Of course, my memory is fading, but thanks to YouTube, it’s getting easier.
And if I were including Southern Section moments, who can forget the seventh-inning throw by Jackson Grayson of Harvard-Westlake in a 1-0 victory over Marina in the 2013 Southern Section Division 1 final at Dodger Stadium.
