Baseball: New pitching rule passed by Southern Section
The Southern Section finalized a new pitching rule on Wednesday that will restrict varsity pitchers to no more than 110 pitches in a game before requiring three days of rest effective with the 2017 season.
One day of rest will be required for pitchers who make between 31 and 50 pitches. Two days are required for between 51 and 75. Three days are required beyond 76 pitches.
It will be the responsibility of the coaches to keep pitch counts and confer after each each half inning. Teams are likely to purchase a visible pitch count sign that will be posted behind home plate to help, though it is not required.
The umpires will not be responsible for keeping pitch counts but will be expected to make sure coaches are communicating to avoid issues come the seventh inning. Protests can be filed and games could be forfeited if a pitcher is in violation of the pitch count rule.
