Webber will rejoin Warriors 13 years after their bitter split

More than 13 years after Chris Webber demanded to leave the Golden State Warriors, the free-agent forward is all set to return.

Webber sent an e-mail to the Associated Press on Monday night confirming he will sign with the Warriors.

Webber was acquired by the Warriors in a draft-day trade with Orlando in 1993 after becoming only the second sophomore to be the top pick in the NBA draft. He won the rookie-of-the-year award and made the playoffs in his only season in Golden State.

But Webber clashed with Coach Don Nelson and demanded a trade before his second season, and was eventually dealt to Washington in November 1994 for Tom Gugliotta and three first-round picks. At the time, Webber blamed unhappiness over Nelson’s sometimes abrasive coaching style.

Webber, who will turn 35 on March 1, finished last season with Detroit after having his contract bought out by Philadelphia. He averaged 11.2 points and 7.1 rebounds for the Pistons.

New Jersey point guard Jason Kidd confirmed to ESPN that his agent has talked to the Nets about trading him before the Feb. 21 deadline.

“It used to be if I got a triple-double, that was an automatic win,” Kidd, 34, told ESPN. “That’s just not the case now. We tried to make this work. We’ve found out it doesn’t. It’s time for us all to move on.”

Dallas Mavericks guard Devin Harris will miss at least two to three weeks because of a bone bruise on his left ankle suffered Sunday against Denver.

The Memphis Grizzlies waived point guard Damon Stoudamire, 34, after reaching a contract buyout.

Stoudamire, averaging 7.3 points and 3.9 assists, can sign elsewhere after clearing waivers.

Cleveland forward Anderson Varejao came home from the Cavaliers’ Western trip to undergo more tests on the left ankle he sprained Sunday against the Lakers. X-rays were negative and the team said an MRI exam only showed the sprain.
