Team says belongings were stolen at Staples Center

Maccabi Tel Aviv players and officials have reported that money and belongings were stolen from their locker room at Staples Center during their exhibition game against the Clippers on Tuesday.

“We were advised of this situation last night and we are conducting an investigation,” Michael Roth, AEG’s vice president of communications, said Wednesday.

Citing an ongoing investigation, a Clippers spokesman declined to comment.

The situation came to light at halftime of a 108-96 loss to the Clippers, and police were summoned to investigate. It was the final game of Maccabi’s brief, but tumultuous, North American tour.

In New York, Maccabi’s Coach Pini Gershon was thrown out and refused to leave the court for eight minutes in Sunday’s exhibition game.

AC Milan beats Real Madrid, 3-2

Pato broke an 88th-minute tie with his second goal of the game, giving AC Milan a 3-2 victory at high-spending Real Madrid in a Champions League matchup between two of Europe’s powers.

Manchester United and Chelsea each moved closer to the second round by improving to 3-0. The Red Devils won 1-0 at CSKA Moscow on Antonio Valencia’s 86th-minute goal, and the Blues routed visiting Atletico Madrid, 4-0, on two goals by Salomon Kalou and one by Frank Lampard. Chelsea also got an own goal from Luis Perea.

French winger Franck Ribery is likely to miss next month’s World Cup playoff against Ireland because of a knee injury.

BASEBALL

Pujols undergoes elbow surgery

St. Louis Cardinals star Albert Pujols underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow, with doctors removing bone chips and trimming bone spurs. He is expected to make a full recovery in time for next season. Dr. James Andrews, who performed the operation in Birmingham, Ala., said that Pujols would not require ligament reconstruction.

ESPN baseball analyst Steve Phillips acknowledged having an affair with an assistant at the cable network and has taken a leave of absence during the playoffs. . . . Donald Fehr will receive an $11 million severance package from the Major League Baseball Players Assn. when he leaves as executive director.

Glover wins PGA Grand Slam

U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover won the PGA Grand Slam of Golf by closing with five-under-par 66 to finish five shots ahead of Masters champion Angel Cabrera at Southamton, Bermuda.

Glover was tied with British Open champion Stewart Cink when they reached the turn at Port Royal Golf Course. The U.S. Open champion birdied the 10th and 11th, while Cink fell back with two bogeys.

TENNIS

Davydenko, Radwanska lose

Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko and third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska were upset in the first round of the Kremlin Cup at Moscow.

Davydenko lost to former top-ranked Marat Safin, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Radwanska lost to Maria Kirilenko, 6-3, 6-3.

Kirsten Flipkens defeated third-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues, 7-5, 6-3, to reach the quarterfinals of the Luxembourg Open.

Pavlik-Williams fight is off again

Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik called off a title defense against Paul Williams set for Dec. 5 in Atlantic City, N.J., because of an infected left hand. Pavlik and Williams were supposed to fight in October, but the bout was postponed because of a hand injury.

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar will be out four to six weeks because of a broken left wrist. . . . The Boston Bruins scoring leader Marc Savard will miss four to six weeks because of a broken left foot. . . . A downturn in wagering as a result of the sluggish economy is forcing Santa Anita to slash its overnight purses by 10% at the Oak Tree meeting. The reductions take effect Saturday. . . . Olympic champion Liu Zige knocked a stunning 1.6 seconds off the world record in the women’s 200-meter butterfly at China’s National Games. Liu was timed in 2 minutes 1.81 seconds, domestic news agency Xinhua reported.
