Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor will appeal suspension
Terrelle Pryor will appeal his five-game NFL suspension, according to a person familiar with his case.
Pryor was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the third round of the supplemental draft on Aug. 22. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him, however, for the season’s first five games for manipulating his eligibility for that draft.
Although the former Ohio State quarterback agreed to the suspension, a person familiar with his case said Pryor now has decided to appeal it. The person spoke to the Associated Press on Friday on condition of anonymity because neither Pryor nor the league has announced his intention to appeal.
The NFL had no comment.
The appeal probably will be filed Monday; the Raiders open the season that night at Denver. Under terms of the suspension, Pryor can’t practice or play until the week of Oct. 10.
Fines
The NFL suspended Baltimore Ravens offensive line coach Andy Moeller for two games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, and fined him $47,000.
The suspension stems from Moeller being found guilty last spring of driving while impaired by alcohol.
Assistant line coach and former NFL offensive lineman Todd Washington will coach the line against Pittsburgh on Sunday, and against Tennessee on the road the following week.
Chicago Bears safety Winston Venable will appeal a $20,000 fine he received Friday for a preseason hit on Cleveland wide receiver Demetrius Williams.
The fine is only $2,000 less than Venable makes per week as an undrafted rookie free agent.
Venable said he hadn’t seen the replay but found a photo showing the hit was legal. Venable drew a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty on the play in the Sept. 1 preseason finale.
Etc.
The NFL opener between the New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers was the second-highest-rated season kickoff game. The Packers’ 42-34 victory drew a 17.2 overnight rating and a 28 share. That also was the second best prime-time rating in 13 years, since a 17.4/27 for a Denver-Miami game in 1998.
Last year’s kickoff game between the Vikings and Saints got a 17.7 rating and 27 share.
A day after expressing some serious concerns about a lingering neck injury, New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck practiced on a limited basis Friday and was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game in Washington by Coach Tom Coughlin. Redskins safety LaRon Landry has been ruled out because of a hamstring injury.
Robert Gallery and Sidney Rice, two of Seattle’s big off-season acquisitions, are likely to be out Sunday when the Seahawks open the season at San Francisco. Gallery has a sprained right knee suffered in the preseason finale against Oakland, and Rice has been bothered by a sore shoulder.
Bears running back Marion Barber will miss Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons due to a left calf injury that has plagued him since the third preseason game. With Barber out, the Bears will use third-year player Kahlil Bell as the backup to starter Matt Forte.
The Detroit Lions have ruled cornerback Alphonso Smith out for Sunday’s season opener at Tampa Bay. Smith has been recovering from a broken left foot. Smith started 10 games for the Lions last season and had five interceptions.
The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a five-year contract extension with nose tackle Jay Ratliff that will keep him with the team through the 2017 season.
