Satellite Radio Deal Set

The NHL announced a 10-year, $100-million deal with XM Satellite Radio on Monday that begins this season and will make XM the league’s exclusive satellite radio broadcast partner beginning with the 2007-08 season.

XM will broadcast more than 1,000 games a season -- beginning with the Oct. 5 opener -- as well as the All-Star game, the playoffs and the finals.

XM has more than 4.4 million subscribers.

Boston Bruin goalie Andrew Raycroft and defenseman Nick Boynton held out in contract disputes at the opening of camp.

General Manager Mike O’Connell said both received more than the minimum qualifying offer for a one-year deal.

In 2003-04, Raycroft was the NHL rookie of the year and Boynton played in the All-Star game for the first time in his three full seasons.

Philadelphia Flyer center Peter Forsberg had an infection removed from his right ankle and will be sidelined at least two weeks.

The Mighty Ducks signed veteran center Aaron Gavey to a one-year contract. Gavey has 41 goals and 50 assists in 355 games with five other NHL teams.

Also, former Duck goalie Steve Shields was invited to camp for a tryout. Shields played with Florida in 2003-04.

Meanwhile, center Ryan Getzlaf, a first-round pick in 2003, was named most valuable player of the four-team rookie tournament for top prospects at San Jose.

The Florida Panthers re-signed top scorer Olli Jokinen and defenseman Mike Van Ryn to one-year contracts, and agreed to terms with defenseman Jay Bouwmeester on a one-year deal.

Jokinen signed a one-year, $2.5-million deal, but terms were not disclosed on Van Ryn and Bouwmeester’s deals.

The Kings have invited defenseman Brad Norton to attend training camp as a non-roster player.

Norton, 30, played 20 games for the Kings during the 2003-04 season. He has played 111 NHL games with the Kings, Washington and Florida.
