Recap: Day 1 of X Games 16

8:12 p.m. PDT:

Jake Brown won the gold medal in the skateboard big air, Thursday’s final event at the X Games. It is his second consecutive gold and fifth straight medal in the event.

Each skater had five runs to land the best possible tricks, with the highest scores counting toward the results.

Brown’s winning run was his second. He did a back flip across the gap from the entrance ramp and followed that by hitting 21 feet 8 inches with a 540-degree turn off of the vertical ramp. The tricks earned him a score of 93.66.

Silver medalist Bob Burnquist finished just behind Brown with a score of 93.00, which he also posted on his second run. Rob Lorifice took bronze with his second-run score of 87.66.

The results duplicated those of the 2009 X Games, in which Brown took gold, Burnquist silver and Lorifice bronze.

Edgard Pereira had to leave the competition after his first run, during which he fell while on the entrance ramp and hit the ground.

7:04 p.m. PDT:

After six years away from moto X freestyle, Travis Pastrana returned to claim his seventh X Games gold medal in the event Thursday at the Coliseum. [FOR THE RECORD: An earlier version of this article said Pastrana had been away from moto X for six years. He was away from moto X freestyle.]

He defeated Levi Sherwood, a rookie rider who took home silver. Pastrana won by one point, 80-79.

“This is the first one I didn’t really expect to come out with,” Pastrana said. “I didn’t have the best tricks.”

Nate Adams took the bronze medal, as Sherwood and Pastrana separated themselves from the rest of competition from the beginning.

Pastrana now has 16 total X Games medals and will compete in three more events before the weekend ends.

The veteran motocross rider passed up on a chance to compete in a record five events when he dropped out of best trick Wednesday.

“It’s a great start to the games,” he said. “It’s not the one I expected.”

6:39 p.m. PDT:

In the second heat of the moto X freestyle, Travis Pastrana stole the crowd and the scoreboard with a 43 in his first run, the highest of the day.

He ended with a score of 82 and was followed closely by Nate Adams, who earned a 79 for his two runs. They joined Mat Rebeaud and Levi Sherwood in the finals.

6:30 p.m. PDT:

Josh Grant won the gold medal in the men’s super X final with a time of 13:08.84.

Defending gold medalist Josh Hansen led for most of the 15-lap race but was overtaken in the in the final laps. Hansen finished with the bronze medal.

Justin Breyton finished second for the silver medal.

5:58 p.m. PDT:

Ashley Fiolek took the gold medal in the women’s super X final with a time of 6:37.14. This is her second gold medal in this event at the X Games.

Fiolek led the entire race, with Jessica Patterson right behind. Patterson nearly overtook Fiolek, but crashed in the fifth lap of the six-lap race. She did not move for several minutes as medics attended to her, but she was able to walk off the course.

Tarah Geiger won the silver medal, and Sara Price took the bronze.

5:58 p.m. PDT:

In the super X last chance qualifier, eight riders competed in the Coliseum to see which four would advance to Thursday night’s final round. They just finished up and here are the results: Chris Gosselaar, Daniel Blair, Jimmy Decotis and Weston Peick. They will join Justin Brayton, Josh Hansen, Dan Reardon, Chris Rose, Josh Grant, Ivan Tedesco, Nick Wey and Jason Lawrence in the finals.

5:34 p.m. PDT:

The first moto X freestyle heat ended with Levi Sherwood and Mat Rebeaud heading to the finals.

Sherwood scored a 71 and Rebeaud tallied 65 from the judges. They will later be joined by two competitors from a second heat.

Robbie Madison was the leader after a first-run score of 40. He fell while performing a body variable in his second run, during which he pulls his body off the bike. Madison did not return for a third ride and failed to advance.

Moto X freestyle has a number of jumps for riders to perform freestyle tricks. The athletes compete in two heats, with four riders in each group. The top two from each advance to the finals.

4:34 p.m. PDT:

Josh Hansen won the first heat of the men’s super X qualifier with a time of 5:21.14. Hansen has won the gold medal in this event twice, including at the 2009 games.

Josh Grant won the second heat with a time of 5:21.79.

The super X round one consisted of two heats, each with eight riders. The top four riders in each heat advanced to the finals, while the fifth through eighth finishers will compete in the last chance qualifier. Four last chance riders will advance to the final, a 12-rider race.

Advancing from the first heat were Hansen, Justin Brayton, Chris Blose and Dan Reardon. Advancing from the second heat were Grant, Ivan Tedesco, Nick Wey and Jason Lawrence.

4:08 p.m. PDT:

ZJ’s Boarding House won first place and an X Games gold medal in shop-vs.-shop.

Active took silver in the contest created to brings kids from local skateboard shops into the X Games atmosphere.

In a competition of best trick, United earned a bronze medal. Ninestar came in fourth place.

4:02 p.m. PDT:

Mike Schultz took the gold medal in the Super X adaptive final with a time of 5:33.12.

Todd Thompson won the silver medal, and Beau Meier finished third for bronze.

Two-time gold medalist Chris Ridgway did not compete.

3:25 p.m. PDT:

Skateboard shops in the Los Angeles area competed to reach the X Games 16 until there were only four.

Active Rideshop, ZJ’s, United and Ninestar made it to the LA Live Event Deck street course.

ZJ’s and Active moved on to the finals after crowded heats full of riders looking to pull off big trips. They will meet for X Games gold.

Active Rideshop and United will compete in a best trick contest.

Teams faced off to determine which shop was the city’s best in 10-minute heats from which two teams advanced.

2:28 p.m. PDT:

Ryan Sheckler scored a 95.00 in his first run to top the scoreboard in the men’s skateboard street elimination Thursday. Sheckler, the 2008 gold medalist in this event, advanced to the finals along with nine others. The finals will take place in two rounds on Saturday.

The street eliminations involved 20 athletes in four heats of 18 minutes. Each athlete had a run of 45 seconds or two falls, whichever came first. Each heat included about four runs per athlete, and the top score was counted as 10 athletes advanced.

Along with Sheckler, advancing were Chaz Ortiz, Ronaldo Ramos, David Gravette, Sierra Fellers, Ryan Decenzo, Mark Appleyard, Nijah Huston and Bastien Salabanzi.

Omar Salazar, Justin Brock, Garrett Hill, Stefan Janoski, Alex Olson, Nick Trapasso, Adam Dyet, Brian Anderson, Tony Tave and Shane O’Neill were eliminated.

In Final Round One, these eight will compete in two heats of four riders. In each heat of four, a rider will take three 60-second runs. The top two run scores for each rider and then added together for their final score. Scoring is based on overall impression, tricks, execution, use of course and landings.

1:35 p.m. PDT:

Everyone on the skateboard park course watched when Rune Glifberg skated during practice for Friday’s skateboard park elimination.

Glifberg rode alongside teenagers and kids with peppered in facial hair.

When he wasn’t riding, he was teaching. Glifberg gave tips to other riders. They exchanged hand signals and talked about the angles at which to take off and land tricks.

The 35-year-old has 10 X Games medals and has competed in each since its inception in Rhode Island 16 years ago.

12:31 p.m. PDT: The 10 riders who will participate in Saturday’s BMX Freestyle Park finals have been determined after a group of 20 riders competed in the elimination round at the Event Deck at L.A. Live on Thursday morning.

11:54 a.m. PDT: Skateboard street riders practiced just before their contest at noon Thursday.

Ryan Sheckler, the street favorite, was among those riding the transitional tea cup and pulling kick flips on the many ramps at the street course.

Sheckler won the competition in 2008 and didn’t finish the event in 2009 because of ankle soreness.

11:23 a.m. PDT:

After two heats here at the BMX Freestyle Park Elimination being at the Event Deck at L.A. Live, Brett Banasiewicz and Jeremiah Smith are in the lead among the 10 riders competing for a spot in Saturday’s finals.

They each completed their first run of the elimination round. There are 20 riders total competing and they’re split into four groups of five for a jam format, which consists of 15-minute heats in which each athlete can take as many runs on the concrete course as time allows in a 40-second maximum run time.

The first- and second-place finishers from each heat, as well as the higher scoring third-place finisher from each heat, will advance to the finals.

Two groups of five have completed their runs and Banasiewicz (79) and Smith (72) are on top.

Banasiewicz gave the crowd an array of front flips and a no-handed 720 spin.

Smith got some of the highest air of any of the first 10 riders and landed an impressive 360-double tailwhip along with a barspin into tailwhip during one of his runs.

We’ll update you after the last two runs and the 10 finalists have been determined.

10:44 a.m. PDT: For years, skateboarder Rune Gilfberg was the most decorated X Games performer to never win gold.

He has now won two straight skateboard park gold medals and will seek a third Friday. In a Wednesday X Games press conference, Gilfberg said he expects tougher competition in his try for a three-peat.

“This year the field’s a lot different,” he said. “There’s a lot of more technical street riders, which is going to be really tough for us veterans, not to say old guys.”

Gilfberg is one of only three skaters to participate in every X Games and has won 10 X Games medals.

10:24 a.m. PDT: One of the reasons X Games organizers wanted to centralize all the events in downtown Los Angeles was to ease the overall commute for fans and to take advantage of the parking, eating and entertainment that the L.A. Live area offers.

As X Games 16 kicks off Thursday morning, the crowd is already starting to pour into the area. Most fans are checking out the vendors that line the street between L.A. Live and Staples Center, but some are staking out good seats at the event deck here, where the BMX Freestyle Park Elimination, the first event of the day, is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
