Australian team now prepared to move into Olympic Village
Two days after calling the athletes’ village at the 2016 Summer Olympics “not safe or ready,” Australian team officials now say they plan to move into the complex on Wednesday.
Workers have been making repairs around the clock, covering exposed electrical wiring and repairing blocked toilets and leaky pipes.
“There has been enormous progress made in the past 24 hours,” said Kitty Chiller, leader of the Australian team. “We now have three floors that are complete, and as we were just walking out of the village a whole crew of cleaners were just walking in to complete a further three floors.”
The complex was built to house more than 17,000 athletes in 31 buildings. Athletes from around the world began arriving Sunday, and many were satisfied with the accommodations.
Chiller said she hoped her team’s problems did not reflect badly on the host city.
“The complaints were not against Brazil, were not against Rio or the people of Rio,” she said. “It’s a beautiful country, a beautiful city and with beautiful people.”
