Could David Eckstein rejoin the Angels?
With one Eckstein in the house, could another follow?
The Angels are expected to add Rick Eckstein to their coaching staff. Eckstein, the former hitting coach of the Washington Nationals, is the older brother of David Eckstein, the shortstop on the Angels’ 2002 World Series championship team.
David Eckstein, 38, served as a guest instructor for the Angels during spring training last year. He is expected to be more involved with the team next year, although not in any kind of full-time coaching capacity. He has told friends he is excited about the long-term possibility of working in the same organization as his brother.
If David Eckstein does pursue a coaching position -- in either the major or minor leagues -- he would not be the first member of the 2002 champions to try coaching.
Darin Erstad is the head coach at the University of Nebraska. Bengie Molina is the assistant hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals. Mickey Callaway is the pitching coach for the Cleveland Indians. Shawn Wooten has managed in the San Diego Padres’ system, including the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League. Troy Percival and Jarrod Washburn have coached high school teams.
