Jets’ Mark Sanchez-Tim Tebow controversy? Wait for some losses

All is well in the land of the New York Jets, with starting quarterback Mark Sanchez finally getting the offense on track against the Buffalo Bills and backup quarterback Tim Tebow getting some action in the “wildcat” formation.

Sanchez completed 19 of 27 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns with one interception in a 48-28 victory over the Bills. During four preseason games, Sanchez and Tebow hadn’t led the Jets to any touchdowns, causing a little worry for their fans.

But all is well after Week 1, although one has to wonder how long that will last. The Bills’ defense usually doesn’t offer much resistance to any team playing well, ranking 30th in the 32-team NFL last season. The Jets’ offense ranked 13th last season, so chalk this one up to what should have happened did happen.

“No controversy at all,” running back Shonn Greene said after the victory. That makes sense, because what rational person isn’t happy after winning a game?

This summer, there were rumors that Sanchez was unnerved by the Jets’ acquisition of Tebow from the Denver Broncos. Tebow was packing after Denver signed former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

But it’s all good, Sanchez reiterated Sunday.

“I bought in,” he said of the notion that Tebow and the wildcat offense he’ll run will be a bonus for the team. “Just like everybody on the team. Not just the wildcat, but the feeling of us as a team and a unit. Transcending football, we’re a family. We’re a tight-knit group.”

Tebow had a chance to shine against the Bills, but he ended up rushing five times for 11 yards and did not attempt a pass (many thinking that’s a good thing).

No matter, Sanchez insisted.

“I knew Tim could come in here and help us, and that is just the tip of the iceberg,” he said of Sunday’s performance. “We’ve barely seen anything yet. We have plenty more in our grab bag of a wildcat. Tim is an explosive guy, so he can help this offense. He did a great job today.”

Tebow, for his part, will remain the dutiful backup, waiting his turn in the wings, although he’s not the clipboard-carrying type. He’s the wildcat type.

“We had some efficient plays,” Tebow said. “Obviously, we wish we would’ve broken one.”

Some fans disagreed, booing his effort. “I didn’t hear them,” Tebow said. “I wasn’t paying attention.”

Maybe, but plenty of other people were paying attention.

So let’s wait for two losses in a row to see what happens with Gang Green. There’s still 15 games to play, and no team in the NFL -- well, except maybe the New England Patriots -- goes unbeaten in the regular season.
