Times’ Bill Dwyre wins award for horse racing column
Times columnist Bill Dwyre was named the winner of this year’s Bill Leggett Award for outstanding feature writing in the Breeders’ Cup writing competition. His column last year chronicled veteran jockey Gary Stevens and his recovery from knee replacement surgery. Stevens was not supposed to ride until January but came back early to ride in the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita. Dwyre received the award at the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters dinner in Lexington, Ky.
Dwyre also won the David Woods Award in 2011 for his coverage of the Preakness. The Breeders’ Cup award was named for Leggett, the longtime chief horse racing writer at Sports Illustrated.
