U.N. Assembly Urges Cloning Ban
From Associated Press
UNITED NATIONS — The General Assembly approved a nonbinding resolution Tuesday that urges member states to adopt legislation “to prohibit all forms of human cloning in as much as they are incompatible with human dignity and the protection of human life.”
The United States was among the nations that backed the document, which passed 84 to 34, with 37 abstentions.
After the vote, several countries, including Britain, promised to push ahead with “therapeutic cloning,” in which embryos are produced, then destroyed, to harvest stem cells.
