High school roundup: Laguna Beach girls’ water polo routs Godinez

Senior Sophia Lucas scored four goals as the Laguna Beach High girls’ water polo team beat Godinez 24-1 in an Orange Coast League game Wednesday night on the road.

Alex Peros, Isabel Riches, Nicole Struss and Molly Renner each scored three goals for Laguna Beach (14-1, 2-0 in league). Kyla Whitelock scored twice.

Thea Walsh made five saves and Quinn Winter had 10 saves for the Breakers, who are in a three-way tie with Mater Dei and Dos Pueblos for the top ranking in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 and 2 poll.

Laguna Beach plays host to Costa Mesa on Jan. 31 in another league game.

Saddleback 13, Estancia 7: Sydni White had three goals for the visiting Eagles in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League game.

Annie Mitchell scored twice for Estancia (6-6, 1-2 in league), while Cassie Corrigan and Gidget Brestel both had one goal.

Estancia returns to action Feb. 7 when it plays rival Costa Mesa in the league finale.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Laguna Beach 77, Saddleback 28: Senior guard Grady Morgan led the Breakers with 23 points in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League game at home.

Blake Burzell had 21 points for Laguna Beach (20-3, 5-0 in league), ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 3AA. Adam Armstrong added 11 points.

The Breakers host Calvary Chapel in a league contest on Friday at 7 p.m.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Saddleback 2, Laguna Beach 1: Senior Marcus Randup scored for the Breakers in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League game on the road.

Laguna Beach (7-4-2, 2-2-1 in league) hosts Calvary Chapel on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

WRESTLING

Corona del Mar 66, Woodbridge 16: Freshmen Jack Thompson (160 pounds) and Danny Reichner (195) had pins to help the visiting Sea Kings finish second in the Pacific Coast League at 4-1 on Wednesday.

CdM coach Mark Alex said he would let his wrestlers decide if the team wants to petition for a berth in CIF Duals, saying, “It is a reward for the kids.”

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Ocean View 51, Orange 19: Senior Erica Almiranez and junior Michaela Fernando led the visiting Seahawks with nine points apiece in Tuesday’s Golden West League contest.

Junior Helen Reynolds added seven points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots, while senior Emi Yamasaki had six points, six assists and three steals.

Ocean View (15-6, 4-1 in league) visits Segerstrom (11-8, 4-1) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The teams are tied for first place in league.
