California: Mammoth gets 54-inch blast
The recent storms have given some of SoCal’s favorite ski resorts a boost, while frustrating others with three or four days of mostly rain.
Mammoth’s official total came to 54 inches, making it one of the biggest storms in the last couple of years. Clouds and snow are expected to hang around again this week, but a warmer system will probably mean snow only above the 9,000-foot mark. Look for clearing skies and excellent conditions this weekend.
Bear Mountain and Snow Summit report 10 to 12 inches of new snow atop a base running from 8 to 18 inches. The resorts are about 80% open, thanks mostly to massive snow-making throughout the winter. “There’s a lot of pent-up demand, and we’re seeing a lot of smiling faces,” said the resort’s Chris Riddle. The new snow was not enough to open additional runs, just the runs benefiting from snow-making, he said Monday.
Mountain High is open after receiving 6 to 8 inches from the storms that began Thursday and lingered through Sunday. But warming weather this week will put the ski resort on a day-to-day basis. Snow-making has been suspended. There is coverage, but some spots are thin and riders and skiers should use caution.
Been looking for a chance to try easy-to-reach Mt. Baldy all winter, but the weather fails us again. The little resort had high hopes for the recent storms after a brutally dry winter. The storms dropped more rain than snow, however, and the resort doesn’t have enough snow to open.
