Explore New York City this weekend on 200 free Jane’s Walk NYC tours
If you want to tour New York City with locals, go this weekend. Jane’s Walk NYC is hosting more than 200 free walk-and-talks this weekend led by volunteers who care about their neighborhoods.
The walks offered Friday through Sunday focus on real-time social and economic issues in the city’s five boroughs as well as historic places and movements.
The Gay Bars That Are Gone walk tells the history of LGBT nightlife in the city through its changing bar scene.
Ghost’s of Penn’s Demolition takes a walk to the modern-day Penn Station at 7th Avenue and 31st Street to explore the iconic Beaux Arts building that was demolished in 1963.
Other topics include a walk and discussion of Central Park’s original 39 arches, protecting cultural landmarks and businesses in the Bowery, and a Mafia walk-talk in Little Italy.
The walks last an hour or two and are free. Each walk on the Jane’s Walk NYC website offers a description with details on meeting points and time and dates. They’re sponsored by the Municipal Art Society of New York, which since 1893 has worked to make New York City more livable.
The Jane this is named for? Jane Jacobs, the journalist, author and activist who worked to protect neighborhoods from being swallowed up by what was in the 1960s referred to as urban renewal.
An added benefit: Expect to see thousands of New Yorkers discovering their city too.
