It’s the busy season in Los Angeles --or as I like to call it, shadow fashion week. Now that the runway shows are over in Europe, it seems like every designer in the universe is touching down in Los Angeles to host trunk shows, dinners and most importantly, to schmooze with celebs.

In the last couple of weeks we’ve welcomed the best and brightest of the London fashion scene. I particularly enjoyed spending time with Mary Katrantzou, a trained interiors and fashion textiles designer, who first gained notice in 2009 for brilliant trompe l’oeil dresses that looked like classic perfume bottles. In recent seasons, she has turned her printmaking skills to knitwear and gowns, which are nature-inspired for spring. (My favorite was an aquarium print.) L.A.’s social ladies ate it up, as did Hailee Steinfeld — definitely one of the fashion girls of the moment — who chose one of Katrantzou’s dresses for a cocktail party held for the British designers.

On Sunday, the Missonis painted the town zigzag, when they collected the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Award. And Burberry’s Christopher Bailey joined Rosie Huntington-Whitley earlier this week in toasting the new Burberry Body line at the brand’s flagship boutique in Beverly Hills.

On Tuesday, I had a wonderful time catching up with Nina Ricci designer Peter Copping, whose racy, lacy spring collection thoroughly romanced Amanda Peet and other guests at the Neiman Marcus-sponsored dinner at the Palihouse.

And on Thursday night, Chanel Beaute staged a star-studded soiree at the Robertson Boulevard boutique to honor five of its top celebrity makeup artists. I loved sitting with Angela Levin, and hearing stories about her work over the years doing makeup for Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman and Bette Midler. (Her favorite Chanel makeup product by the way is the quadra eyeshadow set. In a pinch, she says she can make up a whole face using just that.)

Steinfeld was at the Chanel dinner too — sporting a pair of Chanel combat boots she’s fallen in love with. Other guests included Dakota Fanning and Kate Bosworth.

Next week promises to be just as jam-packed, with Christian Louboutin here to mark the 20th anniversary of his brand, Alber Elbaz making a long-overdo trip to fete Lanvin’s Beverly Hills and Malibu boutiques, and Gucci hosting the first annual LACMA Art + Film Gala.
