‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ and ‘Zookeeper’ are doing boffo at the box office, but now the bad news: They could hit the jackpot at the Razzies too, according to the awards’ president and founder, John Wilson.
‘Transformers 3’ hasn’t received reviews as nasty as the second installment, ‘Revenge of the Fallen,’ which won Razzies for worst picture, director (Michael Bay) and screenplay last year, ‘but it has all of the earmarks to be a big contender again,’ Wilson says. ‘It’s still got a low score at Rotten Tomatoes and it’s a blatant rip-off of the first two films.’
‘Looks like Hollywood is loading up our worst picture category with lots of contenders early this year,’ he adds. ‘All of the big-budget blockbusters in 2011 have been horrible at best. In any other year, ‘Green Lantern’ would be a shoo-in for a nomination, but now I just don’t know -– there’s so much competition!’
‘Zookeeper’ could also make the Razzie list, Wilson warns: ‘It looks like the producers didn’t use the academy’s players directory to find the stars to voice the animals in their film. They used our list –- Sylvester Stallone and Adam Sandler have a long history with us.’
Sandler is such a Razzie darling that he might be nominated a few times this year. ‘Sandler could not only be nominated for that awful movie he did with Jennifer Aniston, ‘Just Go with It,’ but he could end up being nominated against Aniston for his other movie, ‘Jack and Jill’ in which he plays dual roles. If he pulls that off, he’ll become the first star ever nominated for both worst actor and actress in the same year. Eddie Murphy won for portraying both genders in ‘Norbit,’ but his character Rasputia was in the supporting actress category.’
Nicolas Cage might also reap lots of Razzie luv this year. Wilson says, ‘I realize that Nicolas Cage is in such trouble with the IRS that he has to take every role he’s offered, but that means he could end up being nominated twice for worst actor – for ‘Season of the Witch’ and ‘Drive Hungry.’’
In terms of disappointments, ‘Arthur’ was a huge flop. When I heard that cast – Russell Brand doing the Dudley Moore role and Helen Mirren taking over for John Gielgud, I thought, ‘This is going to be really good,’ but I didn’t realize it would turn out to be Razzie good.’
Disappointment is so huge over ‘Cars 2’ ‘it’s possible that Pixar has finally made a Razzie contender,’ Wilson adds.
