Horton Foote’s ‘The Orphans’ Home Cycle’ named best play by New York Drama Critics’ Circle

The New York Drama Critics’ Circle announced Friday that it has bestowed its award for best play for the 2009-10 season to Horton Foote’s ‘The Orphans’ Home Cycle.’
Foote’s play had its world premiere at Hartford Stage in 2009 and premiered in New York at the off-Broadway Signature Theatre Company . The award for best play comes with a cash prize of $2,500. (Foote passed away in 2009 at the age of 92.)
The organization also handed out special citations to actress Viola Davis, who is currently in the Broadway revival of ‘Fences,’ for her ‘sustained achievement,’ and to the Lincoln Center Festival for its ‘visionary international programming.’
A citation for emerging artist was awarded to playwright Annie Baker for ‘Circle Mirror Transformation’ and ‘The Aliens.’
The critics organization gave no awards in the categories of best musical or best foreign play. The last time the group chose to skip both of those categories was in the 2003-04 season.
The awards will be presented at a May 10 reception at the Algonquin Hotel in New York.
Last year, the group gave its top awards to Lynn Nottage’s ‘Ruined,’ the musical ‘Billy Elliot’ and Gregory Burke’s ‘Black Watch.’
The organization comprises 22 reviewers from publications including Time Out New York, the Wall Street Journal, Entertainment Weekly and the Village Voice.
