With October comes sweater weather (OK, so it’s 85 degrees out...), Halloween and chestnuts. And every year around this time comes the announcement from Correia Farm in the Sacramento Delta region that its harvest of Italian variety marroni is ready for shipping. Its fresh Colossal chestnuts arrive a few weeks earlier, but many wait for the smaller marroni that roast up moist and sweet.

The chestnuts are harvested by hand and are available for a short time and come in short supply. But owner Harvey Correia says he is shifting to more Italian chestnuts and fewer Colossals because of the demand. (The Colossals are already nearly sold out this year.)

The chestnuts are available online at www.chestnuts.us for $6.50 a pound (minimum order 4 pounds). They keep refrigerated for several weeks, which means I will have chestnut stuffing for Thanksgiving.
