California on Thursday gets down to the nitty-gritty of regulating its contribution to global warming. The state’s low-carbon fuel standard would reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of the fuel that goes into your gas tank. It may not sound glamorous, but it is the first such standard in the world, and it is likely to be a model for similar U.S. rules to govern the country’s $400-million vehicle fuel market.

The regulation it is a critical component of California’s first-in-the-nation plan to reduce its carbon footprint across virtually every sector of the economy. Policy wonks, and just plain citizens, can read all the comments on the highly controversial regulation and watch the Air Resources Board’s public hearing and vote by streaming video on its website: ARB.ca.gov.
