Wayne Daniels, pictured above, is a 73-year-old retired schoolteacher from Fullerton. For the last 30 years he has been delighting neighbors with a colorful spring display of tulips in his frontyard. This year, for example, he planted 3,200 bulbs.

As California gardeners know, it takes some extra effort to make bulbs grow in our temperate climate. My favorite parts of today’s story by Tony Barboza are the lengths Daniels goes to for his annual extravaganza:

Once he hit retirement, the tulips multiplied from the dozens to the hundreds to the thousands, and he had to make some adjustments. The bulbs overflowed the crisper drawer of his refrigerator, so he bought a second refrigerator and put it in the garage, just for the bulbs.’It’s so chock-full of bulbs, I had to seal it with duct tape to make sure it didn’t pop open,’ he said.

I also love any gardener who shares his passion in the front of his home, so everyone can enjoy the flowers. In fact, Daniels’ neighbors are so in love with his bulbs, several have left their names and phone numbers, in case he’d like help tending the garden.
