Fatal crash closes westbound 60 Freeway

A driver was killed in an early-morning crash involving two big rigs and a car on the 60 Freeway in Montebello, prompting the closing of all westbound lanes, authorities said.

At about 2:50 a.m., officers responded to reports of a car rear-ending a big rig. The vehicles came to a stop, blocking a lane, and another big rig, unable to stop, struck the rear of the car, said Officer Francisco Villalobos with the California Highway Patrol.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers were diverting traffic off the Garfield/Wilcox Avenue off-ramp in Montebello and allowing vehicles to reenter the freeway at Garfield. Traffic was backed up for about three miles, Villalobos said.

Villalobos said authorities are attempting to open one lane of the freeway in the coming hours.
