Horses: More of rare breed born at Wild Animal Park

Three newborn Przewalski horses have joined the herd at the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park.

The park now has 17 of the critically endangered breed, with two more expected soon at the completion of an 11-month pregnancy. The zoo is part of a breeding program to reintroduce the Przewalski into the wild: some have already been let loose in Kazakstan.

Once wild herds of Przewalski horses roamed the plains of Asia. But the pressures of modernity have pushed them to the point of extinction. Individually though the horses retain the hardiness of the breed: within 30 minutes of birth, a foal is up and ready to travel with the herd.
