PHILADELPHIA -- And onto the second rotation.
WHO’S UP: Alexander Artemev conquered a demon. Once a world bronze medalist on pommel horse, an event where the U.S. is weak, Artemev had fallen off the apparatus twice at the national championships. Tonight Artemev flew through his routine with faster and higher flares than any American. His score of 15.650 was world class.
Kevin Tan, who’s father was born in China, pumped himself up during his high bar routine in Chinese and did spectacular back-to-back release moves to score 15.050. And Justin Spring, who blew out his knee at the 2007 nationals while doing a vault, landed a two-and-a-half twist Sukahara and posted a 16.050 score. Spring is fighting through an ankle sprain. Local kid Sean Golden from across the Delaware River in Camden, Pa., topped Spring’s vault with a steadier landing and a 16.200 score.
WHO’S DOWN: Overloaded with enthusiasm David Durante missed the high bar and landed on his back. Durante got back up and finished his routine with his arms shaking. He grimaced at the finish. Up high in the first rotation and flat on his back five minutes later. He scored 13.750, not a score that will help him make the team.
