American superstar Lindsey Vonn, nursing a bruised right shin that she feared might imperil her medal hopes, received another day of rest Friday when the training run for Sunday’s women’s combined event was canceled for a second straight day.
Vonn has not had to test the shin she injured Feb. 2 in a training crash in Austria. Vonn took painkillers and did some free skiing on Thursday morning and was more encouraged about her prospects in competing for Olympic medals in five disciplines.
If the women don’t complete an official downhill training run Saturday morning, before the scheduled start of the men’s downhill, Sunday’s women’s combined event will need to be postponed -- which could buy Vonn even more time to heal.
The men’s downhill is still scheduled for Saturday, although the weather forecast is not promising. The United States announced its four starters for the downhill: Bode Miller, Ted Ligety, Steven Nyman and Andrew Weibrecht.
